Midnite Madnesss a Tremendous Success

The action was fast and furious, food was great, the atmosphere was festive, the view of the fire works was awesome, and the weather was perfect, sums up the first ever Midnite Madness Wrestling Tournament which took place under the lights on the Bucksport High School football field on Saturday night as part of Bucksport's Fort Knox Bay Festival.

In all 134 young men and women from as far away as Berwick and Sanford in grades 6-12 participated in the event which got under way at approximately 6:00pm and lasted until just after midnight. The participants were divided into two groups, a middle school division and a high school division. Within those groups the athletes were further divided into weight classes to assure that every wrestler would wrestle against kids who weighed within 6-10 pounds of one another.

An event of this size would never get off the ground without an army of volunteers and the generosity of many local businesses. "The community support has been just incredible," said tournament director and Middle School wrestling coach Ray Pelletier. "Even though most people and businesses were already spreading themselves kind of thin helping with other parts of The Festival, they still managed to find the time and resources to also help with the wrestling event. That says a lot about our program from the peewees right up through to people whose children have been out of wrestling for years. They always seem to find the time to help."

    High School All-American Honorable Mention

Maine wrestlers Ben Goulette of Morse and Pat Howard of Marshwood each have received High School All American Honorable Mention honors for 2002 by Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine.

The seniors both were proved to be dominate throughout their careers and each won a third state championship last February. They have also placed fifth in their respective weight classes at the New England championships.

Goulette is the only wrestler to win the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship four years. The Shipbuilder standout was unbeaten as a freshman, before being sidelined with a shoulder injury in the state meet. He was well known for his takedown skills and being able to avoid making mistakes on the mat.

Goulette had a career record of 136-3 and Howard was 143-15, with 65 pins. They plan to enroll in and wrestle at the University of Southern Maine and Norwich, respectively, this fall.

Howard, a four-time finalist, won a state crown as a freshman at 112-pounds. The Hawk wrestler was very aggressive and helped carry on the rich tradition of the program. He will compete on the Maine Friendship team in Nebraska in June.

Weigh-in procedures head list of revisions

INDIANAPOLIS, IN () The modification of the weigh-in procedure for duals, multiple-duals events and individual tournaments, and the establishment of a gender-appropriate weigh-in procedure headline the rules changes approved by the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee at its April 7-8 meeting in Indianapolis. The rule changes will go into effect with the 2002-03 wrestling season.

Jerry Diehl, NFHS liaison to the Wrestling Rules Committee, said that the focus of the committee continued to be on the weight-management issue.

"The committee has made changes that it feels are bringing our schools one step closer, or staying in line with, our weight-management philosophy," Diehl said.

The significant changes to the NFHS Wrestling Rules Book include Rule 4-5, which now states: "The weigh-in procedure for duals, multiple-dual events and individual tournaments has been modified to reflect the same procedure, with the only difference being the one-hour and two-hour time frames."

"The weigh-in procedure was just fine-tuned to expedite the process," said Dave Carlsrud, chairman of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee and assistant to the executive secretary of the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). "If a wrestler needs to challenge another scale, it must be done immediately, rather than waiting until others are finished."

In addition, a gender-appropriate procedure has been established for weigh ins. The authorized weigh-in person shall be of the same gender as the wrestlers.

"We addressed a situation that has not existed in the past," Carlsrud said. "People who are doing weigh-ins and skin inspections need to be of the same gender."

In Rule 4-5-3, the language permitting state associations to establish weigh in procedures for subsequent days of tournaments has been removed. All regular- and post-season tournaments will now be following the two-hour weigh-in stipulation for each day of a tournament.

Other significant changes dealt with risk minimization, including Rules 4 and 5.

With Rule 4, the 215-pound weight class is no longer an option. There are now 14 weight classes with the addition of the 215-pound weight class. The committee felt the large variance in weight between the 189-pound and 275 pound classes would be addressed with the addition.

"Adding the 215-pound weight class is a positive thing," Carlsrud said. "We use it in North Dakota, and often it is accompanied by great competition." Rule 4 now states that, "A wrestler's shaved head must be no more abrasive than a clean-shaven face or the competitor must wear a legal hair cover." The rationale resulted from the head being used more than a face while tying up with an opponent and the abrasiveness has caused problems similar to the unshaven facial hair.

In addition, language has been inserted in Rule 4 to limit a competitor to the weight class that the actual weight determines. The competitor may not re weigh at a higher class. Penalties for illegal holds, unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct have been added to Rule 5. By adding these three violations to the list of infractions, all penalties are treated the same. Two other areas also were addressed with the rule changes - equipment and sportsmanship.

Rule 4 added language to define an undershirt when worn under the sleeveless shirt. The undershirt must be of a single, solid color, unadorned and with no more than one, visible manufacturer's logo/trademark. Rule 4 also states that the requirement for a shoe to have laces has been removed as long as the shoe meets all other regulations.

In the sportsmanship area, Rule 7 stipulates that the throwing of any wrestler's equipment is now unsportsmanlike conduct. In addition, Rule 7 now states that the penalty for coaching an injured wrestler during an injury time-out has been removed.

In Rule 1, the committee approved a minimum recommended body fat for females of 12 percent. The minimum recommended body fat for males will remain at seven percent. "With the increasing number of female wrestlers, the committee felt this change was necessary," Diehl said.

The NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee stressed the Points of Emphasis on front headlocks; hygiene of the wrestlers, including clothing and mats; intimidation; unnecessary roughness and taunting; and headgear delay.

    Rules Changes for 2002-03

4-1-1a Language added to define an undershirt when worn under the sleeveless shirt.

4-1-3 The requirement for a shoe to have laces has been removed as long as the shoe meets all other regulations.

4-2-1 A wrestler's shaved head must be no more abrasive than a clean-shaven face or the competitor must wear a legal hair cover.

4-4-1 The 215 lbs. weight class is no longer an option. There now are 14 weight classes.

4-5 The weigh-in procedure for duals, multiple-dual events and individual tournaments has been modified to reflect the same procedures with the only difference being the 1-hour and 2-hour time frames. A gender-specific procedure has been established for weigh-ins. The provision for state associations to establish weigh-in procedures for subsequent days of tournaments has been removed. All regular and post-season tournaments will now be following the 2-hour weigh-in stipulation for each day of a tournament. Language has been added that once a wrestler weigh-ins, the competitor cannot re-weigh in order to move up to another weight class.

5-2-5f, g and h Penalties for illegal holds, unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct have been added to this Article.

7-4-2 The throwing of any wrestler's equipment is unsportsmanlike conduct.

7-5-3 The restriction of coaching a competitor during an injury time-out has been removed.

    Points of Emphasis
    1. Front headlocks
    2. Hygiene: wrestler, clothing and mats
    3. Intimidation, unnecessary roughness and taunting
    4. Headgear delay

    Northeast Challenge Tournament

The 3rd Annual Northeast Challenge Wrestling Tournament will take place on Jan. 10th & 11th, during the 2002-03 wrestling season. The tournament will once again be held at the Beautiful Coach USA Arena located in downtown Elmira. Elmira is located in NY just off the PA border. 'DOT COM' to 'DOT ORG'

Please note and adjust your favorites that our domain name has changed from a "DOT COM" to a "DOT ORG". This was done to be in allignment with our non-profit status. The new name is "http://MAWAOnline.org" and the older "DOT COM" will no longer work for you. There are several search engines that still return our website with a "DOT COM" and they too will fail to find our old site. In a few months those search engines should have their databases updated to point to our new "DOT ORG" name of "MAWAOnline.ORG".

Also during week of April 14th, 2002, our web site experienced a two day outage that was due to the renaming of our DNS servers. Once this was complete, our web site was fully functional. The DNS rename was like renaming your street name while your house stayed in the same physical spot.

    MAWA Web site upgraded

The Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance has rolled out a new version of our website. Several new features are now available which include:

  • Menu has moved to the top and slides to right showing menu options
  • A Site Map has been created showing the navigation throughout the site
  • Selected Bulletins have been placed into the left hand side of the scrolling green pane
  • The Home page has been condensed and simplified
  • Table of contents for both the articles and announcements has been created
  • The list of articles and announcements has been replaced by a TOC
  • Several images have been updated and added such as UPDATE and NEW

You will notice that navigatiing the website is quite different. The navigation options are on the top of each page. As you move your mouse over each option such as SERVICE, a list box of options pops open and you can slide your mouse arrow through this list. If the mouse changes to a HAND image, then you may click on that item and you will be taken to the target page you selected. If you get lost on this, use the TOC to get a special list of the web site called a SiteMap.

Jon Kane Wrestling Champ and OW

The word has just come from Newark, DE Jon Kane (Deering HS) is the 176 pound national champion in the National Wrestling Coaches Association`s U.S. Senior High School Open Tournament.

The coaches and his family are very happy. Jon Kane made the State of Maine proud.

From a cell phone conversation with Jon and his Mom and Dad, Joyce and Roger, Jon was selected as the OW for the tournament. He pinned all of his opponents. The first round Jon got a bye on Friday. Jon's first competitor was from Ohio. The next was from Michigan. The 3rd wrestler was from NJ and in the finals Jon wrestled a VA kid who he pinned. In all there were 16 wrestler in the 176 weight class.

John Kane of Deering won the 176-pound title at the National Senior High School championships in Newark, Delaware on Sunday April 7th, 2002. Kane recorded three pins during the two-day event. Kane countered a rip back move in the semi-finals to pin an opponent from Michigan. The Ram wrestler then stuck a Virginia wrestler in the finals. Kane, a 2002 Class A state champion, has also placed sixth and fifth, respectively, in the New England championships. Kane has been accepted into both United States Military Institutions at West Point and Annapolis.

Congratulations to Jon, his family and Coach Al Kirk.

NOTICE OF FIRST ANNUAL MID-COAST WRESTLING CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

    Date : January 10th 2002
    Time : 7:00 p.m.
Place : Camden Hills Regional High School Lecture Hall
    Website: ME Mid Coast Wrestling

    Dear Wrestling Supporter:

Mid-Coast Wrestling Club Formed. On October 10th, 2001, members of the Windjammer Wrestling Booster Club formed a new incorporated club called the Mid-Coast Wrestling Club (MCWC). Following the appointment of a Board of Directors at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) and passage of Club articles and bylaws by the membership, MCWC will file for non-profit status with the IRS, which will ensure that the club is not liable for state or federal income tax as a result of our fund raising activities and will also allow individuals and businesses to make tax-deductible donations to the club.

Proposed Club Activities. The Club will continue to support our local school teams in much the same way that the Booster Club has in the past, providing funds for uniforms, equipment, trips, and camp scholarships. MCWC will remain independent of the school teams, but will budget "donations" to these teams to ensure that their needs are met. Additionally, MCWC will develop and expand the Peewee wrestling program for children aged 5 to 12 as well as off-season programs for middle school and high school wrestlers. "Open" (Adult) programs and or competitive teams may also be formed if there is sufficient interest. Club-sponsored tournaments, clinics, and camps are also planned. To support these activities, we have secured a 4,000 square foot practice facility, which has been graciously donated by an area business. The Club will also set aside a portion of its annual funds to develop a scholarship fund with the ultimate goal being that any graduating wrestler who wants to pursue tertiary education will have the funds to do so.

Affiliation with USA Wrestling. The Club has received a Club Charter from USA Wrestling, which is the national governing body for amateur wrestling. USA Wrestling charters over 2,600 clubs and sanctions over 1,500 local, state, regional and national competitions. As a chartered club, MCWC will have up to $2 million in general liability protection covering all club practices and sponsored events. All wrestlers participating in MCWC practices or events (note this does not include school team activities) must join the Club and USA Wrestling. At present, the fee to join USA Wrestling (via MCWC) is $30. However, MCWC will make staggered payment plans available to those who need them as well as fee subsidies if necessary. With USA Wrestling membership, the wrestler will be able to attend hundreds of events around the country including many in Maine. In addition, members will receive secondary non-duplicating sports accident insurance (i.e. if your child is injured in practice and you do not have insurance, your child will be covered by insurance although there are deductible and co-payment provisions).

Membership in MCWC. All interested wrestlers, parents, fans, and coaches who attend the AGM will be deemed "temporary voting members" for the purpose of initially discussing the club’s structure, goals, and strategies as well as to select the first Board of Directors and approve Club Bylaws. It is expected that the Board will suggest that General Members pay a nominal fee to secure membership in the club ($5 to $10) to cover the administrative costs of keeping the membership informed. Wrestling Members (coaches and competitors) will likely need to pay a membership fee of $35 to $50 to cover the cost of USA Wrestling Membership ($30), MCWC membership ($5 to $10), and perhaps for a club T-Shirt and or gym bag. Again, flexible payment plans and subsidies will be available.

Board of Directors. In our incorporation filing with the State, we indicated that MCWC would have at least three directors at any time but no more than seven. We can increase the upper limit in the future if desired. We are currently proposing that the Club start off with five directors. It is suggested that director terms be two years, but that initially, some of the directors have only one-year terms so that in the future, not all director positions will vacate simultaneously. Proposed directorships are:

President. The President will be responsible for running General Meetings as well as weekly meetings and setting the agenda. The President will also be responsible for coordinating Public Relations functions and will work closely with the rest of the board to coordinate their activities. Will develop and oversee scholarship program. Initial Term: 1 year. Thereafter: 2 years.

Vice President, Wrestling Activities. Identify needs of school programs and set donation budgets for MCWC. Support, organize, and coordinate with school programs to facilitate special events like the trip to St. Benedicts. Organize and set budgets for Peewee, off season, and adult wrestling programs. Oversee wrestling facility management. This director will probably need to appoint 3-5 people to handle these major responsibilities. Initial Term: 1 year. Thereafter: 2 years.

Vice President, Fund Raising. Will oversee and coordinate all fund raising activities of MCWC including, alumni solicitations, corporate donations, bottle drives, concessions, etc. Must work closely with the Treasurer and VP of Wrestling Activities to ensure that enough funds can reasonably be raised to meet wrestling and academic objectives as well as maintain a healthy club financial position. 2-3 support people will be needed under this director to oversee various specific fund raising programs. Term: 2 years.

Treasurer. Will oversee day to day banking needs of Club as well as coordinate long-term budgeting with the other officers. Develop and maintain the financial accounts of the Club for submission at Club meetings and for annual report filing with the State and IRS. Term: 2 years.

Secretary. The Secretary will be responsible for taking notes (minuets) at all Club meetings and distributing them to club members at the following meeting. Will maintain Club mailing lists. Potentially responsible for making official state and federal filings (such as annual report), although this could be a shared responsibility with other board members. Term: 2 years.

Please come to the first AGM on January 10th 2001 to discuss development of the new club and help us to select directors. We look forward to your active participation.

York Assist Coach Sullivan dies in auto accident

Ken Sullivan who was an assistant wrestling coach at York was killed in an auto accident Nov 24, 2001.

For those that knew Ken, he was passionate about wrestling, loved to complete, and enjoyed working with kids. Many of us got to know Ken as his son Kyle wrestled in middle school and high school where Kyle currently is on the vasity team and is very successful.

Ken was very quiet in ways such that he would not boast of his work, but would happily talk about how his kids and his own children were doing on and off the mat. Often he'd discuss issues around wrestling and general good parenting and coaching mixed with mat technique.

We will miss those interactins with Ken as parents, boosters, coaches, and wrestlers.

Our thougths are with the Sullivan family and the York wreslting team.

Tom Laite Augsburg, OW and Div III Champ
    Ben McCrillis AIC
    Brian Walsh Ithica State
    Jason York Boston University

The purpose for the event is to get wrestlers mat time and improve wrestling knowledge. The Clinicians are all Maine wrestlers who medaled nationally, in New England, have been ranked nationally and in New England and in a few cases have won national titles. Some of these Maine wrestlers attend college in the mid west and are currently wrestling or have graduated and want to share their knowledge. The clinic will last about 2 1/2 hours. Each group will be exposed to a broad knowledge base and will be in groups small enough to get individual attention.

NOTE: Best approach is to join as a Team. You become a Team MAWA member for a year which reduces your tourney fee to $5.00 per person.

Once the clinic is done, the takedown tournament starts. Wrestlers will be broken into even weight classes of eight. The 2 out of 3 takedowns wins the match with no time limit. These types of tournaments are fast and gives focus to wrestling on the the feet. This is where any good wrestler needs to excel and this type of tournament allows for a good start regardless of your wreslting level.

Medals and awards will be presented. No team score will be kept.

Monies will be divided between MAWA funding and Noble HS. This will also give you an opportunity to see the new Noble HS.

We hope you can join us for the day.

    SPORTSMANSHIP is Vital!
