What browser should I be using and why?

Since the web has become popular over the years, there has been a struggle to standardize the browsers and languages used to see web pages and how they behave. Microsoft and Netscape have been two leaders in this arena.

Over the past few years, Microsoft has proven to be a little more stable in terms of its browser and implementation of add-ons and enhancements. Netscape is a great browser and is used often to debug but it has many limitations in terms of stability since its implementation is based on open source and has not yet kept up with new features web developers often use today.

One final point: Given that this website uses the menu located at the top of each web page, the navigation methods greatly rely on the use of the latest tools and features offered the new browsers. Using an older browser may cause this website to behave less normally.

That said, release 6.x of Netscape is suppose to address many limitations and provide for new features not now available.

About Your Current Browser

The name and version of the client software that processes your page requests and runs the interface whose format is named with its version:

Internet Exporer: use IE 6.1

IE has a new release of 6.1 Service Pack 1 and its installation is now recommended.

The older releases less than IE 6.1 SP1 are also not fully functional to allow the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), some javascript features and even some Java runtime applet features.

We recommend you download and install IE 6.1 SP1.

Netscape Navitagor: use NS 6.x

NS has a new release of 6.x series that corrects most of the prior problems. These include javascript run time errors, java run time and plugin errors, and html errors. Before NS 6.x, how NS handled Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) caused runtime errors. Most web sites today depend on the fully functional CSS and this is becoming more true as we all use XML to pass and process data on the web.

In order to correct runtime errors, we recommend you download and install NS 6.x or download and install IE 6.1 SP1 or higher.

American OnLine (AOL): use IE 6.1 SP1

AOL is one of the oldest and by far has the wides user base of any provider. This is seen from the statistics we see on our MAWA sebsite. What we know from some AOL users is that Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) causes problems for different versions of the AOL browser regardless of the CSS version and feature. You will often get unpredicatable results as you navigate MAWA and many other sites by using AOL browser.

We recommend you download IE 6.1 SP1 or higher. Consider connecting to your provider with AOL but launch the IE browser.

WebTV: use a PC with IE 6.1 SP1

WebTV has a strong user base. However there are several limitations to its implementation of many special features now used by web sites today. CSS, java and javascript run-times and plug-ins often fail and just were never planned to be implementated with WebTV. Unprectable result will occur as you navigate MAWA.

We recommend you use a PC and download and install IE 6.1 SP1 or higher.

Other Browsers: Use IE 6.1 SP1

Any one can write their own browser if they have the skill and knowledge. How they implement and interface with java, javascript, and the Microsoft and Sun Micro Systems plug-ins remains very controlled. Given that we cannot tell how your browser will behave, we feel a common and proven browser is best used when you want to do pure navigation. We encourage folks to try new and better ways. If they run into run-time problems with MAWA site they should consider other options.

There are many entities that write their own browsers and they can be tried with MAWA. Please be aware we write our web site to fit the Microsoft and Sun Micro System standards.

We recommend you download and install IE 6.1 SP1 or higher.
